Armed Forces Day comes to life at Westbridge Primary School

On 25 July representatives from each of the three Services visited a school in Battersea to conduct an Armed Forces Day assembly and activity session.

Using the assembly plan material supplied by Defence Dynamics, Corporal Stewart Green from the Army, Senior Air Crew (SAC) Sarah Cross from the RAF, Able Seaman (AB) Claire Mullet and AB Nikki Loxton from the Royal Navy provided the Westbridge School with an insight into the life and role of Britain’s Armed Forces.

Following the presentation came the ‘Dress up and Press-Up’ part of the assembly. Two teachers and two pupils were selected from the audience and were split into two teams, one paired with AB Loxton, Team A, and the other with AB Mullet, Team B. The pupils were the captains of their respective teams and their goal was to dress up the teachers in the Desert Combats that had been supplied. Once dressed the teacher then had to complete 10 press-ups. With great support and cheering form the audience, Team B won.

Classroom activities followed the assembly. The first activity involved the students watching a video describing certain roles within the Services, then they had to discuss and contrast the differences between the Service role and the same role within civilian employment.

A treasure hunt ensued with the Class being split into three teams, aptly named Royal Navy, Army and RAF. The pupils ran around the playground following the clues that had been provided by the Head teacher Miss Kang. The Navy team won under the leadership of SAC Cross. All pupils received an RAF goody bag as their prize.

There was a huge buzz among the pupils for the day and it seems that a fun day was had by all with one pupil declaring 'Armed Forces Day should be every day'.
