Aghaderg Cultural and Heritage Society will run a series of events to acknowledge Armed Forces Day.
We will host a series of events beginning on Saturday 29th June that will include an exhibition and display looking at Service in the Armed Forces from 1914 to the present day. The ‘Armed Forces Day’ event which will include former armed forces Captain Doug Beattie MC who is now a serving MLA (Doug will talk about his life in the Armed Forces) and show a short film. We will also facilitate a Wartime Exhibition of Memorabilia and artefacts by historian Neil Henning. The Northern Ireland Military Wives Choir will perform at the Sir Henry Wilson Hall with other local performers.
Across the following week, we plan to run ‘armed forces reflection days’ in the various counties in the north and south of Ireland. We would like to produce educational leaflets and educational tools to help the community understand the sacrifice and service provided by the armed forces. We will run a competition from the local primary school pupils to express via art what the ‘Armed Forces’ means to them.
Overall, this series of events will raise awareness of Armed Forces Day in our local area, and educate and enlighten people about the service and sacrifice provided by the Armed Forces.
