Armed Forces Countryside Day
In West Devon and East Cornwall we have over 30,000 veterans and being home to both the Army and Navy housed at the Royal Citadel Plymouth, Bickleigh Barracks and HRM Raleigh. There is a strong pride locally with our connections to the services.
Battling On has been in conversation with the NSFPS to create an Armed Forces event that would not only celebrate the work of the Armed Forces but will bring serving personnel together with their families / children by providing a range of fun activates. The Armed Forces Countryside Day will be run by Battling On, Plymouth NSFPS, Plymouth Marine Cadets and Duchy College Army Preparation students. Members of the wider community will also be involved in the event as volunteers, manning activities, providing refreshments and co-ordinating transport and parking logistics.
The event will include demonstrations and interactive activities such as Combat Cooking, teaching families to cook on a WW1 field kitchen, bushcraft, visiting a WW1 replica trench and WW2 Anderson Shelter, mountain biking, meeting our therapy animals. Battling On has been recently short listed for the National Soldiering On Animal Partnership Award for its work in using animal intervention to supporting veterans struggling with mental health issues. The animals include alpacas, reindeer, giant Poitou donkeys, sheep, goats pigs and ponies. Other activities include forest art, raft and shelter building, a climbing wall and picnicking in the woods.
