Armed Forces Covenant Education and Entertainment Day University of Derby SAFCO Society.
- Kedleston Rd
We are a student society at the University of Derby and have decided to hold an Armed Forces Day event on Education, Signposting, and Entertainment for families in the hope that we can complement the planned events happening in Derby.
We would like the event to be a celebration of the University of Derby signing the Covenant, as well as of Veterans, Serving personnel and their families. We would hope to have talks and stalls and a few outdoor activities as well as advertising job opportunities and educational opportunities for ex-serving personnel, their families, and students.
The focus will be educating anyone who wants to attend on what is available and the help that is out there, free for veterans, serving personal and their families. With a small fee to members of the public.
We are hoping the family event will be educational for children as well (for example using exotic pets to show children different species in places they or family members could go to, art therapies for all the family, registered mental health nurses have expressed interest in offering mindfulness sessions for children and family’s during the day).
Hopefully, if we can get an army vehicle, someone could talk about how it works, what it does and where it’s been etc.
We are thinking about a single point of access stall for people to be directed to the right places and possibly a peer mentor recruitment stall, where peoples email addresses could be collected.
Combat stress, Help for Heroes, The Midlands and East Veterans Service and The Department of Psychological Medicine (based at QMC in Nottingham) are all confirmed to come and talk to people in lecture theatres about ways they can help people.
There is parking available at the university. There are ramps and disabled access through the university.
The nearest train station is Derby station, which is 2.3 miles away. There is a bus a service that runs every 7 minutes from Derby Albert Street to Kedleston Road.
