Armed Forces Day
Northern Parade Schools has an average of 19% of children in each of our seven year groups that come from service families. Each year around the time of Armed Forces Day, we try and have a whole day dedicated to and celebrating our armed forces. Through out the school day, we have different activities explaining (in an age appropriate manner) things that our forces do and just how important they are.
We invite parents in that are in the forces to explain a little bit about their jobs and veterans talking about how things used to be.
Children rotate through out the day to different activities (ranging from classroom based work eg explaining what different medals are and them designing their own ; to taking part in PT activities, seeing how the Military Police process crime scenes, or being able to sit in army/naval vehicles and dress up in uniforms). Each year we also invite the local Portsmouth News to cover what we are doing.
Although this event is only open to the children that are enrolled at our school, it does mean that we have over 830 children taking part in it each year.
