Basingstoke — 24 June 2019
Armed Forces Day flag raising ceremony 2019
The Mayor of Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council Cllr Diane Taylor will be leading the Armed Forces Day celebrations and flag-raising ceremony at the Civic Offices on Monday 24 June at 2pm.
All service personnel (cadets, those currently serving and veterans) and members of the public are welcome to attend this year’s Armed Forces Day in the town, organised by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council in partnership with Basingstoke and Overton Royal British Legion.
A parade will take place from War Memorial Park bandstand, featuring a Corps of Drummers, RAF Odiham personnel, the 3PL (Basingstoke) Army Cadet Force, 443 (Basingstoke) Air Cadets and Basingstoke & Deane Sea Cadets. The ceremony will commence with a flypast by a Chinook helicopter from RAF Odiham (subject to service requirements).
The Armed Forces Day flag will be raised and Basingstoke and Deane Borough Mayor Cllr Diane Taylor will present badges to veterans.
We are delighted to announce that Gavin Watson, a Hampshire war veteran who won gold for Team GB at the inaugural Invictus Games, will be guest speaker during the ceremony.
At the closure of the ceremony everyone is invited to walk around the various displays, forces recruitment stands and view Gavin Watson’s medal collection. Refreshments will be available to purchase.
Donations received at the event will support SSAFA, the Armed Forces charity which provides lifelong support to servicemen and women, veterans and their families.
If you are a veteran and would like to have your veteran’s badge presented to you by the Mayor, please contact Frank Connolly on 01256 414393 (answerphone provided) and leave your name, address, contact number, service and regiment.
