Armed Forces Day

Aylesham — 24 June 2017

Celebrating Aylesham’s Armed Forces during the 90th Anniversary

10:00 am to 6:00 pm
Market Pl
Canterbury CT3 3EY

This event will form part of the wider celebrations of Aylesham’s 90th birthday anniversary. A major community event is already being arranged by local partners on the 24th June to allow Aylesham residents (old and new) to come together, have fun and share their experiences and memories of Aylesham.

At the moment this event is a traditional community fayre. If this application is successful the additional funding will allow us to add an arena within the day that is dedicated to celebrating the military connections Aylesham has had, since the first villagers moved in during 1927. We feel this a really good opportunity to celebrate those residents with a service history, to bring ex-military and civilian communities together in a fun and positive way and to provide an opportunity for partners to learn more about the needs of ex-service personnel living in Aylesham.

We would like to provide free family fun activities using both an indoor and an outdoor space at St Finbars Church and on the Market Square. The dedicated event arena will have distinctive “Aylesham’s Armed Forces” branding. The Armed Forces Arena will offer refreshments with a bbq or buffet (weather permitting). We have the support and involvement of the Kent Branch of the Green Howards who will attend with a stall. The Green Howards have strong connections with Aylesham Village. The Princess of Wales Royal Regiment will also be invited to attend as will the Aylesham Cadet force who will be supported to get involved. We will also approach the Queens Riders Regimental Association who are based nearby in Wingham and have members living in the Village. The family fun activities will provided by Carl Robson of Beyond Limits. Carl is ex-military and grew up in the village and has set up a successful outward bound/PT business. The activities that will be funded in the outdoor space will be:
• Adult’s military style competitions running throughout the day
• Children’s military style competitions running throughout the day
• Children’s military camouflage face painting
• Gazebo displaying Beyond Limits competition leader boards and prizes
• Mobile climbing tower including safety barriers and top quality safety harnesses
And, in the indoor space:
• Military style team building and leadership tasks
• Aylesham military reunion photograph – all past and present HM Forces join together for celebratory photograph (Campaign medals encouraged to be worn)
• Free giveaways to currently serving and ex HM Forces
• Fully Qualified and DBS checked and First Aid Trained Instructors
We will also invite the local service and ex-service charities to attend with stalls and will deliver a consultation that will help partners in Aylesham find out more about the nature and the needs of the ex-service personnel living in the village. This information will allow partners to develop activities and projects that will interest and engage this often overlooked group in the future.
