Cottage Veterans Armed Forces Day Street Party
It is our annual AFD street party held in McCallum Way, in the grounds of Erskine Hospital. The event is organised by the Veterans that live in the cottages. The veterans are Ex Armed Forces with various degrees of disability due to their time in service. We have a buffet, raffle, tombola, bouncy castle, face painting, community singing and a disco.
The community sing is led by a females singer dressed as Vera Lynn. We invite the residents of Erskine Hospital along, and usually get a great response. Any funds raised are used to cover the costs of running the event, and any surplus goes into Erskine Hospital. The normal programme would be a welcoming of visitors, community singing, buffet including a BBQ, more community singing, then disco. Running concurrently is the face painting and bouncy castle for any attending children. We always have a great day and there is plenty of colour, as we decorate the whole street in UJ bunting and have several flags flying. Last year we dedicated it to RAF 100 and had cakes and bunting to that theme. The Cottagers and visitors are encouraged to dress in the style of the WW2 era.
