GLASGOW ARMED FORCES DAY SATURDAY 27 JUNE 15
Armed Forces Day (AFD) will be celebrated in Glasgow on Sat 27 Jun 15. It will incorporate elements of those who currently serve and have previously served in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces as well as Reserves, Veterans and Cadets. It is a civic-led public relations event aimed at increasing public support and recognition to the contribution the Armed Forces make and have made to the nation. The celebration will start with the AFD Flag raising ceremony on Mon 22 Jun 15 followed by a Parade and a civic reception on Sat 27 Jun 15. The events will close with a Flag lowering ceremony on Mon 29 Jun 15.
AFD Flag Raising – This is an event that raises publicity for AFD 15. The Flag raising ceremony will take place at the Cenotaph on George Square Mon 22 1030 Jun 15. All units are requested to provide a representative to mark this occasion (all personnel attending are to report to the RSM at the Cenotaph at 1000 for 1015hrs. Dress will be No2 non-ceremonial or equivalent for serving members with all other organisations encouraged to wear blazers or equivalent.
AFD – This will take place on Sat 27 Jun 15 in and around George Square, Glasgow. It will be the main interface between the military and the general public that will include a parade with representation from all 3 Services, regular and reserves, various veterans groups and cadets. Activities will include static and mobile displays as well as information and awareness tents followed by a civic reception in the City Chambers.
AFD Flag Lowering – This is a low key event which will take place on the morning of the 29 Jun 15 and be attended by GCC only.
Glasgow Armed Forces Day 2015
Outline – The AFD event in Glasgow will take place in and around George Square on Sat 27 Jun 15. It will consist of the following:
- Military Stands.
b. Parade and March Past.
c. Civic Reception.
The Parade – The parade will form up in three bodies: the serving military followed by the Ex Service detachments and the cadet associations. The band for this year’s AFD will be RM Scotland Band.
Veterans and Associations – This contingent will form up on Holland St under the direction of RSM GSUOTC. Those that are unable to march the whole parade route should make their way to George Square and form up under the direction of a nominated SNCO from 32 Sig Regt. They will be directed to join their fellow veterans during the march past.
Timings are as follows:
a. 1130hrs: Form up on Hard standing Holland St.
b. 1145hrs: All parade markers in place.
c. 1200hrs March off led by the Band?
d. 1220hrs Whole parade in George Square.
e. 1230hrs Lord Provost Address.
f. 1400hrs Civic Reception.
There will be a civic reception held in the City Chambers. GCC is responsible for running this event.
Invitations – There are 500 printed tickets for the Civic Reception. Veterans Associations wishing tickets are to contact the Project Officer.
Public Access – Access to the City Chambers will require an invitation or suitable evidence of being a member of HM Armed Forces or a Veteran. There will be military reps at the entrance to check admittance.
