Armed Forces and Veterans Day honours the outstanding contribution made by current members of the Armed Forces and by Veterans of all ages. The day is an opportunity for us all to join together to pay tribute to our Armed Forces past, present and future.
This year’s event marks the 35th anniversary of the Falklands War and the sinking of HMS Sheffield.
This anniversary provides an opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who lost or risked their lives, to reflect upon the human cost of conflict and to have hope for a more peaceful world.
Watch the Veterans parade and ceremony
Veterans meet and form up – 11.30-11.45am – Norfolk Row (St. Marie’s Catholic Cathedral)
Parade disabled contingent meet – 11.45am – St Paul’s Parade (Brown’s Bistro)
Parade – 11.50am – Norfolk Row, Fargate, Town Hall Square, Peace Gardens
Ceremony – 12 noon (approx) – Peace Gardens
Show your support for our Sheffield Veterans, Cadets and armed military organisations as they parade from Norfolk Row, up Fargate, past the Town Hall to the Peace Gardens. The Lord Mayor will then lead a short ceremony to thank those involved and to mark the occasion. The parade and ceremony will have musical accompaniment from Woodhouse Brass Band.
Dance up a storm in the Peace Gardens
12.30-1.30pm and 2.05-5.10pm
Ashby Big Band – While away the afternoon with music from one of the best Glenn Miller/Swing When You’re Winning tribute bands. They are a fantastic swing orchestra using the classic big band formation of Saxes, Brass and Rhythm Section.
Derek Herbert brings an extra dimension to this year’s event with the witty, amiable and larger-than-life presence of Winston Churchill. He will enthral us with some of Churchill’s famous World War II speeches and celebrated quips culminating in the famous Battle of Britain speech in character. Not to be missed – pure nostalgia!
Derek Herbert as George Formby will take you on a nostalgic journey of song, laughter and entertainment performing a variety of well-known, foot-tapping, singalong songs and medleys with a repertoire of humorous, original George Formby songs.
See displays, find out more about cadets and armed forces between 11.00am and 4.00pm
Join us on Fargate to see our armed forces and reserve services as they show off their skills and offer you the opportunity to join in. Why not come along and test your hand to eye co-ordination and your agility. You can also find out more by meeting representatives of local military organisations, cadets, members of the armed forces and reserve forces.
You can also find out about Sheffield’s commitment to the Community Covenant, the city’s pledge of support to our military personnel and veterans.
