Armed Forces and Veterans Day
Saturday 18 June 2022
Join the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Cllr Sioned-Mair Richards, Sheffield Armed Forces and Veterans to celebrate with a series of activities.
• Watch the veterans’ parade and ceremony
• Tap your toes and sing along to the Ashby Big Band as they transport us back in time with wartime classics and some dance floor favourites
• See the displays and find out more about cadets, the armed forces and the armed forces covenant
Armed Forces and Veterans Day honours the outstanding contribution made by current members of the armed forces and by veterans of all ages. The day is an opportunity for us all to join together to pay tribute to our armed forces past, present and future.
This year’s event marks the 40th anniversary of the end of the Falklands War and the sinking of HMS Sheffield and provides a poignant opportunity to commemorate the service and sacrifice of those who lost or risked their lives. This is also a year for celebration as we mark HM The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and thank her for 70 years of devoted service to our nation and for her role as an ambassador for the UK to the world.
Parade and ceremony
Veterans, Cadets & Armed Forces meet and form up – 11.30-11.50am – Pinstone Street (near Police Box)
Parade – 11.55am – Town Hall Square, St Paul’s Parade, Peace Gardens
Ceremony – 12 noon (approx) – Peace Gardens
Show your support for our Sheffield veterans, cadets and armed forces organisations as they parade past the Town Hall to the Peace Gardens. The Lord Mayor will then lead a short ceremony to thank those involved and to mark the occasion. The parade and ceremony will have musical accompaniment from Woodhouse Brass Band.
Dance up a storm in the Peace Gardens
12.30 and 1.30pm
Ashby Big Band – While away the afternoon with music from one of the best Glenn Miller/Swing When You’re Winning tribute bands. They are a fantastic swing orchestra using the classic big band formation of Saxes, Brass and Rhythm Section.
See displays, find out more about cadets and armed forces between 11.00am and 2.30pm
Join us on Town Hall Square and Pinstone Street to see our armed forces and reserve services as they show off their skills. You can also find out more by meeting representatives of local military organisations, cadets, members of the armed forces and reserve forces.
