Tameside’s Armed Forces Day has become a key highlight in our annual civic events calendar. The borough’s ex-service/service personnel their families and the borough’s military heritage remain high in our sense of civic pride.

Tameside has joined-in the nationwide celebration of Armed Forces Day since its inception; growing the size and success of the event year by year. Over the last few years our visitors have reached attendance in excess of 5500. The target audience of the event is the entire community of the borough. The entire event is geared around increasing the wider community’s understanding of the Armed Forces community, in an engaging and positive way.

A brief summary of the proposed event is included below;

• Separately from the main event, there will be a short Remembrance service which will involve members of the wider community; Scouts, Cubs, Guides, Royal British Legion branches, Cadet Forces, Veterans and other members of the forces community. The Service provides a great opportunity for the entire community to come together in a respectful display of support, understanding and remembrance for service men and women who have passed.

• A Reception event for Veterans, families of the fallen and serving personnel, with the Civic Mayor of Tameside and local dignitaries.

• The day will contain a high level of quality entertainment, heritage and cultural activities and exhibits, ensuring a wide breadth of engagement opportunities for service personnel and the general public.  It will include:

• Displays by service units including Army Reservists.
• Displays and exhibitions by Cadets; Air, Army and Sea, including the highlighting of adult volunteer roles.
• A full range of welfare and support services for veterans and service families will be presented on the day, including governmental, charitable and voluntary sector, ex-service specific (T.A.S.C, RBL, SSAFA, RSA et al).
• ‘Meet the Veterans’ opportunities to encourage inter-generational dialogue and understanding with veteran recognition badges.
• This year will see an increased focus on attracting more recent ex-service personnel and their families to explore, understand and support their transition to civilian and community life.
• Engagement with a range of civilian uniformed services and groups, with volunteering opportunities made clear.
• Military re-enactment and vintage military vehicle enthusiasts groups.
• Displays and engagement opportunities from the Council’s Cultural Services team including a presence with objects from the Museum of the Manchester Regiment.
• Display and engagement opportunities by the Tameside’s Local History Forum.
• Books, Art and historical information displays.
• A range of exciting physical activities for the public to participate in.
• A platform for military vehicles and memorabilia.
• There will be Live music and entertainment throughout the afternoon, tying everything together into one coherent event and highlighting the role of the Armed services within our wider community.
