2020 will be the 75th anniversary of victory in Europe, VE Day 75, of a World War 2 that cost six million lives over a six-year period. Thatcham plans to commemorate and celebrate this occasion with a major event spectacle during its annual and established ‘Family Fun Day’ which takes place on Henwick Worthy sports ground on June 28th, 2020 with a theme of VE Day and VJ Day- 75, Let’s Celebrate. This also coincides with Armed Forces Day with weekend activity across the U.K. and as such an opportunity to support the work of UK’ s armed forces in a historical celebratory occasion.
Family Fun Day will embrace the theme with a programme which will include a military parachute display, military band (The Waterloo Band of 7 Rifles ), military re-enactment area, classic and services’ cars from the 1940’s, music and dance displays from the era, as well as family fun attractions and community stalls encouraged to link with the theme. We have also confirmed attendance from local military units,
The 7 Rifles and The Royal School of Military Survey will be having an active presence on the day with display and recruitment stands and they have both confirmed their attendance. We have written to Berkshire Army Cadets and will also be writing to our local Sea Cadets and RAF cadets and encourage them to take out stall/ information stands, we have also requested an RAF fly past which will be confirmed in April 2020.
We will be encouraging all military personnel both in active and past service to attend by sending out invitations. The event is free to attend but all service personnel that attend we would like to present a special commemorative medal to make the occasion
We wish for the communities of Thatcham to have opportunities to understand and be part of the occasion and as such we are planning community-based projects in the build up to Family Fun Day.
We would like to host a mass Thatcham Schools choral performance lead by Berkshire Maestros with original compositions linked to VE-Day and involving all 5 primary Schools and 2 secondary Schools associated with Thatcham. We would also like to develop an Inter -Generational Project
