Now in its third year, and from 2026 moving to the Saturday before Armed Forces Day, our free town centre Armed Forces Family Day begins with a VIP complementary breakfast in the Market Kitchen for Veterans, Reservists, Cadets and serving Personnel, followed by a parade led by a local Veteran. The parade concludes in the Glassworks Square and starts a fun day of military themes activities for all ages – including climbing walls, agility test, Navy STEM and lots more. We also host a large representation of our four Armed Forces Breakfast Clubs, who enjoy a licensed area to promote their clubs to prospective new members. Our three Veteran Accredited residential care homes are an integral part of the parade, and afterwards enjoy a ‘street party in the sky’ in the Library@lightbox entertainment area, where they are the hosted by the Mayor of Barnsley and entertained by a choir. Our library offers a space for further military activities and crafts. The day commences our week long celebration of our Armed Forces Community, concluding with a formal service on the 27th June, hosted at Barnsley Town Hall by the Mayor and Leader of the Council.
