Salute to Service – an Armed Forces Community Celebration is a borough-wide programme of community and educational events taking place across the two weeks leading up to Armed Forces Day and the two weeks following it. The programme will celebrate the contribution of serving personnel, reservists, veterans, cadets and their families whilst strengthening connections between the Armed Forces community and local residents, including those of school age.

The project has been designed to ensure that recognition of service is not confined to a single day but instead becomes a visible and inclusive programme of community engagement across the borough’s towns and neighbourhoods.

Through a series of military heritage walks, community gatherings and educational activities delivered in partnership with local schools, Salute to Service will highlight the borough’s military history, encourage intergenerational understanding and provide meaningful opportunities for veterans and Armed Forces families to connect with their communities.

The programme will include:
• Guided “Walk and Talk” heritage events exploring the military history of our local Borough towns
• Armed Forces community afternoon teas designed to reduce isolation among veterans and military families
• School engagement activities including veteran visits, assemblies and creative projects
• Intergenerational activities connecting young people with veterans
• A formal Salute to Service Dinner held in a Sergeants’ Mess to celebrate service and recognise local supporters of the Armed Forces community – this will be the culmination of the event.

All events will be free to our Armed Forces Community.

By combining heritage, education and community engagement, Salute to Service will create a borough-wide celebration of service that strengthens relationships between the Armed Forces community and the wider public while supporting the principles of the Armed Forces Covenant.
